Windows Phone 8: Location awareness and my phone

Posted In Mobile, Windows Phone - By Techtiplib on Wednesday, November 28th, 2012 With No Comments »

You can choose to turn on location services on your phone, which lets apps use your location information to provide you with a richer experience (as soon as they ask permission). For example, Maps can display your current location if you’re not sure where you are in relation to your friend’s address, or Bing can show nearby businesses in your search results.

To turn location services on or off

  1. In the App list, tap Settings Settings icon > Location.

  2. Turn Location services Toggle on icon on or off.

Note

Without a cellular data or Wi-Fi connection, it may take a long time for location services to locate your phone, or it may not work at all. To learn more about how Windows Phone’s location positioning services work, see Location and my privacy FAQ.

Tips

  • Some apps can use location services in the background. For example, an app may quickly refresh your location to update your Live Tiles, or keep track of your route when you go on a run.
  • If you can, it’s a good idea to connect to a Wi-Fi network when you’re using an app that needs to find your location. That way your phone can find your position even more accurately.
