How Speeds in Internet Compare in Terms of Mbps

In order to get the most for their money, internet users today have to learn how to weigh the different features of the internet. Foremost among these features is speed because this determines how efficiently one can do work online and how quickly this work can be accomplished. Here are a few simple tips to show the ordinary consumer how to make such an evaluation to find out how speeds of the internet compare by Mbps.

Understanding What Internet Speed Really is

Before you can figure out how speeds of the internet compare by MBPS, it is important to have a basic grasp of how the internet transmits data. Data is transmitted over the internet in units called “bits” (arranged in sets of 8 called “bytes”) and a million bits is what is known as a megabit. The letters Mbps stand for 1 million bits per second while the letters MBPS stand for megabytes per second. A megabyte is 8 times the value of a megabit. This is one of the basic pieces of information that factors in how speeds vary so when you look at what plans state as the speed they will provide, you know you have to look at that letter “B” very carefully.

When internet providers say they have 3 Mbps internet speed, they are not exactly giving you the whole picture of how fast your internet service will be;  arriving at an accurate estimate means finding out much more than this. You have to consider not just the overall speed but also the upload and download speed of an ISP. The upload and download speeds will be typically lower than the ISP’s overall speed and there’s no problem with that. However, there are times when an ISP’s over all speed is higher than most but its download and upload speed is slower compared to ISPS with a low overall speed.

Mbps from Country to Country

Twenty years ago, internet connection was through the painstakingly slow dial-up system which required its own dedicated phone line. Today the internet straddles the entire globe through broadband connections with different countries having varied available speeds. It is interesting to note how speeds of the internet compare from country to country.

Although data and info can change in the blink of an eye (or a byte), surveys show that the ten countries with the fastest internet speeds are: Hong Kong, Taiwan, Lithuania, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Macau, Switzerland, Sweden, South Korea and Singapore. The U.S. has an average broadband connection speed of 3.9 Mbps which ranks it 14th or 15th; Australia is ranked at 34th place, ahead of New Zealand.

Speed up your Internet

All this information shows that your own internet is largely limited to the speed available in your country but there are some things you can do to give your own speed a boost. For a start you can get the best speed being offered by providers. You can turn off graphics, animations, sound, video or other multimedia content from your browser. You can also surf when the internet traffic is low – it is heaviest on weekends and evenings. In addition, you can purge your cache periodically. These steps will help you get the best speed possible.
