How Hotel Automation Has Gone Wireless

Both wireless and wired energy management systems, like those powered by Wi-Fi or ZigBee, are making inroads in the hotel industry. They do so by controlling equipment that contributes to the high use of energy in the operations of a hotel. Adoption of hotel automation has been fueling a competitive advantage for businesses, and apparently the return on investment is now within reach for many hotels and resorts.

How Hotel Automation Has Gone Wireless

However, the numbers are still small, with only about 5% of hotels currently equipped with automation systems at room level. Lack of information concerning the new technology is the main barrier. As end-users acquire more knowledge on how their facilities can be automated so as to reduce consumption of energy, some contractors interested in the wireless and low-voltage advantage are positioning themselves in a way that they can benefit.

Reasons For Interest In Hotel Automation

There are several reasons for energy management being on the radar for engineers and hotel managers. One of the reasons is the importance that is put by the end-users on hotels to control usage and wastage of energy. Conservation programs are now a focal point for many groups wishing to book hotel stays and corporate conferences. It is important for hotels to take a proactive approach when it comes to energy efficiency in order for them to have a competitive edge in the current hospitality industry.

Another reason is that energy costs constitute one of the biggest budget items for hotels. Fluctuations in rates of utility can significantly affect the bottom line together with the profits made. Many engineers and general managers are just figuring out that the latest technology out there can assist in putting a handle on those fluctuations and keep the costs more controlled and contained.

Some Of The Wireless Hotel Automation Systems

A wide selection of options is being sold by vendors to address the hotel energy management needs. A majority of these solutions are wireless, offering the integrated systems contractor the opportunity to install and provide maintenance to systems during renovations and new constructions. One of the main changes made to automation technology is the ease at which installation is made. The outdated systems were more complex, but the setting up of the new networks is quite simple with ZigBee mesh technology that is wireless. This simplicity has led to more instances of self installation, with more technicians joining the business. Since the systems are easily configurable, the installation can work on different types of systems in a building.

One of the systems is made up of a customizable software interface having real-time monitoring and reporting of energy individualized to the facility’s needs. In each room, battery-powered lighting controls, thermostats and sensors are deployed and transmit data with the use of a ZigBee connection.

Another popular in-room results and controls solution is occupancy sensors and key card readers. Passive and active systems provide varied options such as infrared motion sensors. The sensors are connected to back-end office software that allows hotels management to control all room with a smart phone or from a desk. Based on occupancy, it reduces consumption of energy.
