A Guide to Creating and Using Your Own Torrents

Perhaps you have a huge collection of photos from your recent travel adventure and you want to share them with your friends and family, but the file is too big to send any other way. Or perhaps you want to share other large files in a quick and convenient manner.

A torrent helps you to share content by breaking it up into small pieces and distributing it randomly between your peers. Then the peers share these small pieces with each other, which saves having to send the same pieces over and over again with everyone involved.

The torrent file itself tells all of the peers and the seeds involved how to distribute and share the content. If you are wondering how to create a torrent and share it with others, let’s take a look at the process.

A Guide to Creating and Using Your Own Torrents

Of course, before you make a torrent of your own it is important to make sure that you are not sharing any copyrighted material. For example, creating a torrent of a recent film or CD is probably a violation of copyright law. The artist who created that material is not receiving revenue from DVD or CD sales, so it is similar to stealing the product from the shelves of the store. You can get in a lot of trouble for sharing copyrighted material online in the form of a torrent, so make sure that you are only sharing content that doesn’t infringe copyright.

How Creating a Torrent Works

In order to share non-infringing content with a torrent, other people must have access to the torrent – which can be done by uploading it to the torrent network, using a client such as Vuze bittorent. Choose the website that you want to upload the torrent to and take a look at its policies and rules on its FAQ section so that you understand what you are getting into.

Many torrent websites will require you to register before you upload, so complete this important step.

Considering the Size of Your Torrent

When you are creating your torrent, it is important to consider the size. Not everyone will have enough room on their hard drive for a very long torrent and downloading it will take a very long time. It is better to divide the torrent into smaller sections if it is a very large file. Recommended reading: Download Torrent file with out install applications.

Avoiding Corruption in the Torrent

It is important to make sure that the files you are using are not in use while you are making the torrent and that they are not modified afterward. This is because any changes in the file will cause corruption in the torrent.

Making a New Torrent File

When you have your torrent client open, select the option to make a new torrent file. This is usually located under the File menu, but it will be different for each torrent program. There will usually be a selection on the menu called “Create New Torrent” or something along those lines. If you can’t find it, you can always check the official website of the client for more details.

Once you have selected this, drag the files that you want into the torrent. If you have several files, you can consider arranging them all in a folder first to keep them organised – then select the folder for the torrent. As a default, the name of the folder will become the name of the torrent, but it is possible to rename it later.

Adding a Tracker

The next step is to add a tracker, which controls the transfer of data within the torrent. It is similar to a URL and you can find a list of working trackers online. If you are indexing your torrent on a downloads website, you will likely need to use the tracker that is owned by that particular website – as not all sites will allow you to use an external tracker.

At this point you can also enter any additional information, such as a comment for the torrent if you want to add more information.

Seeding Your Torrent File

Once you have created your torrent file and saved it, you can open it so that it is ready for seeding. The client that you are using probably has a mode for this. If you are making the torrent specifically to send files to your friends and family, you will need to send them the torrent file.

Now that you know how to make a torrent, you can use this process to send large files in a quick and easy way in the future.
