Learning a new language is difficult, and English can be particularly frustrating to learn. Learning English with the help of an intensive English program can help prepare any student for a future that is bright and successful. After ESL courses, students are prepared to enter the workforce or start an educational program that leads to a certification in the health care, networking, or business industries.

It’s almost impossible for a student to learn English when it is only spoken during class time. In order to become fully proficient, students must immerse themselves in the language and the culture. While it may be difficult at first, there are a few simple things that can be done to make the process easier.

Improve English Skills for a Brighter Future

Students that focus on changing daily habits often find that they gain proficiency quickly, and are more prepared to enter the next phase of their lives – learn more at Computer Systems Institute ESL Academy.

Practice, Practice, Practice

It may seem embarrassing to struggle through ordering a coffee, or to ask a question in a department store, but these are prime opportunities to practice conversational English and learn more about the language. People speak differently in these casual situations, and this type of language is difficult to teach during a course or through a book.

No matter how hard it is, it’s important to always speak in English when possible. Individuals learn more about English through speaking, it casually than almost any other way.

Engage During Downtime

When all your time is spent working out of your certification course packets and books, you may need a break every once in a while to open up a newspaper or something you can read for fun. When you take some downtime, don’t give up on learning English. Read magazines and newspapers in English to get a better grasp of the language and how it is written.

If you’re struggling with reading in English, pull out a few children’s books for a simplified version of grammar and vocabulary. Once you’ve mastered those, move up to more difficult pieces from the newspaper. Reading regularly will help you master not only speaking the language, but will give you valuable insight into how to write it.

Spark Conversation

If you’re struggling with the language, but still want to gain proficiency in order to move on and get a good job, network to find an individual that desires to learn your native language. This gives you both an opportunity to ask questions in a comfortable setting, and you can improve both your native language and your English skills with regular conversation and tutoring. The interaction doesn’t have to be official or structured, just a basic meeting that allows you to address any issues you aren’t comfortable addressing with others.

Ask for Help

Instructors of ESL courses often have specific tips and advice for problems students are having. Your instructor may be prepared with an easy way to remember something, but you won’t know until you ask. ESL teachers are educated in ways to simplify the language learning process, and struggling through it on your own can be difficult. Take advantage of any resources you have available to you to help you become more proficient in a language that will change your future.
