The month of October, 2014 with the festive season of Diwali just around the end of the month, saw a flurry of handset manufacturers lining up smartphone launches to milk the occasion. There were a number of smartphone launches in the month of October, where some managed to inspire awe, while some could not live up to our expectations. While the festive season has already gone by and with that, the shopping spree. However, the number of options in the market rose significantly making it difficult to choose one. We bring to you a roundup of handsets that managed to impress us and those who could not fit the bill. This is an attempt to make it easier for a potential smartphone buyer to make a choice.

Winners

1. Huawei Honor Holly

Smartphone war Huawei Honor Holly

The Huawei Honor Holly was a good answer to the Xiaomi Redmi 1S and offered a good set of specifications in an attractive price range. What set it apart from the Chinese handset is the easy availability of the device. Notably, the Xiaomi Redmi 1S, which is no doubt a very impressive handset, however it could not satisfy a large customer base owing to limited inventory. The Huawei Honor Holly with similar specifications and price tag, came as a reprieve for those who could not get their hands on the Redmi 1S. This Android Kitkat smartphone comes with a 5-inch display, 1.3 GHz Quad-core processor and 8 Megapixel camera on its back.

2. HTC Desire 820

Smartphone war HTC Desire 820

The Taiwanese handset manufacturer, HTC hit a gold mine with the launch of its HTC Desire 816, which an impressive handset with a good display, specifications and reasonable price tag. HTC now upped the ante with its recent launch, HTC Desire 820. This handset, which has been priced at INR 24,990 comes with humongous Octa-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 13 Megapixel back camera, 8 Megapixel front camera and 5.5-inch display. Needless to say that at this price, the new launch by the manufacturer is quite a steal.

3. Xolo Q2100

Smartphone war Xolo Q2100

With the Xolo Q2100, the handset manufacturer bust the myth that the much hyped, high end features can be found only on flagship devices and to get this features, one need to dole out oodles of cash. This handset is the first to feature a fingerprint scanner under INR 15,000. Currently, the handset is retailing at a best price of INR 12,151, which makes it a lucrative offering. Prior to this device, fingerprint scanner was found only on devices like Samsung Galaxy S5 and iPhone 5s, all off which were launched with a price tag northwards of INR 50,000. This handset features 5.5-inch display, 8 Megapixel rear camera, 2 Megapixel front camera, 1.3 GHz Quad-core processor and 1 GB of RAM.

4. Obi Falcon S451

Smartphone war Obi Falcon S451

Coming from the stable of a lesser known handset manufacturer, Obi, the Falcon S451 is another myth buster in terms of features. This handset comprises 4.5-inch display, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system, 1.3 GHz Dual-core processor, 8 Megapixel rear camera and 1 GB of RAM. However, the highlight of the handset is the rotating camera, which means that the 8 Megapixel rear camera of the handset can be rotated 180 degrees to the front to serve as front camera. And all this in a price tag just under INR 8,999 makes it an incredibly lucrative option. Notably, the rotating camera features only on Oppo N1 and N3 as of now, both of which cost around INR 35,000.

5. Intex Aqua Amaze

Smartphone war Intex Aqua Amaze

There are now, n number of handsets in the market offering high end features in affordable price tag. However, Intex has truly upped the ante with its Aqua Amaze smartphone. This handset costs a measly INR 10,690, however, the price of this smartphone is nowhere near revealing what lies underneath the hood. This smartphone features a beast of an Octa-core processor clocked at 1.4 GHz at this price point. The nearest contender is the iBerry Auxus Nuclea X, which offers an Octa-core processor for INR 12,990. We daresay that the difference of around INR 2800 is quite steep in a price conscious market like India. Other highlights of the Intex Aqua Amaze include Android 4.4 Kitkat operating system, 5-inch 720p display, 1 GB RAM, 13 Megapixel rear camera and 5 Megapixel front camera.

Losers

1. Yotaphone

Smartphone war Yotaphone

Brought by the Russian telecoms company, Yota, the Yotaphone was launched amidst much fanfare in the country. However, the handset did not fare well despite being the first handset to feature an additional e-ink display on its back and the below mediocre specifications did not help the cause any further. The bulky design, outdated Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system and a hefty price tag of INR 23,499 did not bode well with the customers in India. Notably, the handset was launched worldwide in December 2013 and brought to India only in October, 2014. A little update and hardware tweaks to stay in tandem with the latest tandem would have helped the manufacturer to cushion its first launch in India.

2. Zen Firefox U105

Smartphone war Zen Firefox U105

The Mozilla Firefox operating system based smartphone were a lost cause since the very beginning owing to various drawbacks like dependency on constant Internet connectivity, nascent app ecosystem and dismal hardware. Zen seem to have skipped out on market analysis before going ahead with the launch of Zen Firefox U105. This handset bore similar specifications to that of Intex Cloud FX and Spice Fire One Mi-FX1, both which did not survive the grind.

3. Nokia Lumia 830

Smartphone war Nokia Lumia 830

The Lumia series of handsets from Nokia are no doubt one of the best in the market and Lumia 830 is no exception. However, what went against the favor of this handset is the price tag, which had been pegged at INR 28,799 at the time of its launch. This is because the specifications available in the Lumia 830 are readily available under INR 10,000 in India. The Nokia Lumia 830 comes with a 5-inch display, Windows 8.1 operating system, 1.2 GHz Quad-core processor, 10 Megapixel rear camera and 0.9 Megapixel front camera.

4. LG L Fino

Smartphone war LG L Fino

The LG L Fino merits a place in the list of Losers of October launches purely on the merit of its price tag. This Android smartphone features mediocre specifications and comes with an exorbitant price tag of INR 14,500. Needless to say, there are several handsets with better processors, RAM and screen in under INR 10,000 segment. The LG L Fino offers a 4.5-inch display, 1.2 GHz Quad-core processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 Megapixel rear camera and 0.3 Megapixel front camera.
